- The immune system is a complex network of cells, organs, specialized tissues, and chemicals. The lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, thymus, and tonsils all play a role, as do antibodies, specialized white blood cells known as natural killer (NK) cells, T cells, and B cells (commonly known as lymphocytes).
- Two types of immunity protect the body: innate and adaptive. Innate immunity provides the first barrier against microorganisms and is present at birth. The skin, mucous membranes, and stomach acids are examples of innate immunity, which protects vulnerable tissues from unwanted microbes, viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Adaptive immunity is needed throughout life, either after immunization or when successfully fighting off an infection.
- Symptoms of reduced immune function include frequent colds and flu, recurring parasitic infections, infections that escalate from mild to serious, and infections that are normally well controlled by the immune system. Nutritional and health factors also affect immune function. For example, all forms of sugar affect the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria: studies have shown that a diet high in sucrose (table sugar) impairs the immune system. Alcohol consumption, even in moderation, also affects a wide range of immune defenses. Furthermore, being underweight and obese are associated with impaired immune function.
