Amertil tablets are used to counteract the allergic symptoms caused by various allergens. It is indicated in the treatment of adults and children over 6 years of age: chronic and seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, chronic urticaria.
Action The active substance in
Amertil
tablets is cetirizine, which is a second-generation antihistamine with a strong and long-lasting effect. It is a selective antagonist of histamine H1 receptors. It has no affinity for cholinergic and serotonergic receptors and does not penetrate the blood-brain barrier, therefore it is devoid of unfavorable sedative properties.
It counteracts the allergic reaction in its early phase, and also inhibits the migration of eosinophilic cells and reduces the release of mediators of the late phase of the allergic reaction. Orally administered cetirizine is rapidly and completely absorbed, reaching its maximum concentration in the blood after approximately 60 minutes. Food does not affect the amount absorbed. About 93% binds to the blood plasma protein. The mean half-life of cetirizine is about 8 hours in adults and about 7 hours in children. It is excreted unchanged within a few days, mainly in the urine.
Dosage
Adults and children over 12 years of age usually take 10 mg (1 tablet) a day, preferably in the evening.
In children from 6 to 12 years of age, the drug is used depending on their body weight.
Children weighing more than 30 kg are given 10 mg (1 tablet) once a day, and children weighing less than 30 kg are given 5 mg (1/2 tablet) once a day.
People who are particularly sensitive to the action of the drug and children, the recommended dose can be administered in two portions, every 12 hours. Do not increase the recommended dose without consulting your doctor.
